How does the National Law on the Standard Language and Script regulate the use of the complex and variant form of Chinese character?
  • Update:2007-04-19 15:50

Promoting the use of standard Chinese by the government does not require that the complex and variant form of Chinese character is banned from all public occasions, rather to limit the use of the complex and variant form within certain circumstances. Therefore,“National Law on the Standard Language and Script”prescribes six conditions under which the complex and variant form can be preserved and used. On the basis of the regulations made by national superior law, and according to the relevant requirements of the national language work evaluation standards, the city government makes specific requirements for name boards with complex and variant characters owned by legal persons or other organizations, Section 12 of the“Regulations for Implementation”prescribes: advocate the use of standard Chinese character for handwritten characters in inscription and signboard. Legal person and other organizations with handwritten complex and variant characters in its name board should place the name board in standard Chinese in an appropriate position.”These regulations are mainly for the purpose of stressing the legal status of standard Chinese characters in our country, so far, the measure is satisfactorily implemented in our city.
